Does an Extension Stop IRS Penalties? (CPA Perspective)

A filing extension generally gives you more time to submit an individual income tax return, not more time to pay. A valid extension can protect against a late-filing penalty when you file within the extended period. Late-payment penalties and interest are separate questions.

Do not mix up the penalty rules

Estimated-tax underpayment rules concern payments during the year. Meeting an estimated-tax safe harbor does not automatically settle late-payment penalties on a balance due after the payment deadline. Review the applicable penalty, payment dates and any available relief separately.

Before requesting a review

Gather the extension confirmation, payment history, return and any IRS notice. Identify the tax year and the exact penalty shown. Do not assume that an extension or a prior-year payment percentage resolves every charge.
